ffa state officers tour mve group's solar facility
Ephrata, Pa (May 17, 2011) – Pennsylvania’s current FFA State Officer team gathered in Northern Lancaster County on Friday, May 6, 2011 at MVE Group to learn first-hand about a growing energy aspect for agriculture. The team toured MVE's warehouse and facility along with a solar system being installed on a poultry farm.
With solar energy advancing as a more widely used energy source, many agriculture businesses are installing PV solar systems on their roof or land to offset rising utility costs.
With over 38 years of experience as electrical contractors in Central Pennsylvania, designing and installing solar systems naturally fits MVE Group's skill set. The company expanded and opened their MVE Solar division in 2009, and are now approved by the PA Sunshine Solar Program to install residential and commercial PV solar systems.
Converting sunshine into electricity is complex, and the State FFA Officer team was excited to get a more in-depth understanding about the details of this growing renewable energy source.
MVE’s Commercial Energy Consultant Nevin Brubaker guided eight FFA State Officers, past President of the FFA Foundation Bruce Miller and Administrative Director of the FFA Foundation Stephanie Shirk, around MVE’s facilities in Ephrata before taking the group to the nearby Buckwalter Farm in Ephrata where solar panels were near completion on two of the six chicken houses. Brubaker shared, “Many agriculture-related business owners and farmers are realizing solar energy can largely offset rising energy costs. Large buildings typically already exist on their property. By utilizing their roof space to install solar panels, they can generate electricity which will offset their costs and produce energy credits which can be sold back to the utilities."
The FFA State Officer team asked a variety of questions regarding current financial benefits and legislative issues regarding solar energy, along with the technical concerns about how solar energy is converted. State FFA Officers volunteer to defer their continuing education following high school graduation to serve the FFA. The majority of the 2010-2011 FFA team plans to continue their education at the end of their term in June 2011.

Yoder's country market installs $2.6 m solar system
Yoder's Country Market has chosen MVE Solar to design and install their $2.6 million solar PV system.
Yoder's Country Market is a locally owned, family supermarket in New Holland, PA. Yoder's has believed in the 'green initiative' for years by supporting local produce farmers and supplying their own fresh milk processed right at the Market. John Yoder, owner of Yoder's Market, shares "I'm continually looking at our entire facility and evaluating what we should do as new advances and products come out on the market. Currently I'm in the process of replacing some of our electric heat with natural gas". He also hired MVE Group to replace his store lighting last year, which generated substantial savings.
The next step for Yoder's is to utilize sunshine to help power their store and plant. "Sunshine is a gift from God which we can utilize to generate electricity ", Yoder said. "I feel we need to constantly be abreast of ways we can save our resources and keep ourselves competitive in the marketplace".
MVE Solar, a division of MVE Group, Inc. is currently installing the system, which is estimated to be complete Spring 2011. The project consists of two separate buildings that include 2,430 modules for a total of 668.25 kW. The majority of Yoder's solar array is being installed directly over their grocery store and brand new milk processing area. The remaining 33kW will be installed on Yoder's Car Wash & Fuel Station. The system will produce roughly 779,000 kWh of electricity annually.
While the upfront cost of solar can be significant, customers see paybacks through utility savings, federal rebates, tax depreciation savings, and the sale of SRECs (solar renewable energy credits paid by utilities). Utilities benefit from solar projects because they yield substantial savings in generation, transmission, and distribution costs if energy demand is lowered during peak hours. For this reason, MVE Solar and Yoder's Country Market understand that solar makes both financial and 'electric-grid' sense!
